This joint webinar with NASPGHAN featured Aparajita Singh, MD, MPH, from the University of California, San Francisco, and Brett Hoskins, DO, from Riley Hospital for Children, who shared insights on the evaluation and management of incidental adenomas in the adolescent and young adult population.

Dr. Singh opened the session with an overview of the rising incidence of early-onset colorectal cancer, with a focus on young adults. She highlighted the unique features of the young adult population, including the prevalence of adenomas in younger age groups. She reviewed temporal trends demonstrating increasing incidence over time and discussed how risk factors, including diet, obesity, and the gut microbiome, accumulate across the lifespan. The talk also addressed surveillance strategies for young-onset adenomas and considerations for genetic testing.

Dr. Hoskins then focused on adenomas in adolescents, reviewing their epidemiology and the clinical settings in which they are identified. He compared adolescents and adults in terms of presentation and management considerations, and discussed current approaches to care, including pediatric polypectomy practices and how they differ from adult recommendations. He outlined an approach to the initial evaluation of adolescents with adenomas, including a proposed clinical algorithm, and emphasized indications for genetic counseling. The session also covered surveillance recommendations, common pitfalls to avoid, and the psychosocial impact of these diagnoses in adolescents, along with best practices for communication.

This webinar provided practical perspectives on managing incidental adenomas in the adolescent and young adult population, bridging pediatric and adult gastroenterology approaches.
