November is National Family Caregivers Month, a time to honor the millions of Americans who play an indispensable role in attending to the needs of their loved ones.
Family caregivers are often the unsung heroes of healthcare, serving as a bridge between their loved one and providers. They help navigate complex medical systems, attend appointments, manage complex medical routines, and provide emotional support. They are the ones who tirelessly and selflessly advocate for the needs of their loved ones; their insight and presence directly impacting outcomes.
Yet, caregiving often comes with significant emotional, physical, and financial strain. Many caregivers experience stress, burnout, or declining health, all while prioritizing someone else’s well-being. As healthcare providers, we can make a difference by recognizing, supporting, and empowering caregivers as essential partners in care.
As providers, we know that caregivers are essential partners in patient care—managing appointments, medications, and emotional support—often at great personal cost. Many face burnout, depression, or neglect their own health while prioritizing others.
What we, as providers, can do to help support caregivers:
Recognize their role: Acknowledge the caregiver’s essential contributions.
Ask and listen: Check in on how they’re coping and screen for stress or fatigue.
Share resources: Connect caregivers with community and online advocacy groups.
Encourage self-care: Remind them that caring for themselves is vital to caring for others.
