We were excited to once again serve as a resource for our members and the wider hereditary GI cancer community during the 2026 Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month.
At CGA-IGC, our mission is to empower health care professionals with the knowledge they need to care for patients with hereditary GI cancer.
Thanks again to our wonderful Communication Committee members who worked tirelessly to create this month's content. This would not be possible without their hard work and dedication. Thank you!
Fight CRC shared that early-onset colorectal cancer continues to rise, with 1 in 5 new cases diagnosed in adults under 55. At the same time, an estimated 1 in 279 people in the U.S, nearly 1 million individuals, are living with Lynch syndrome. These individuals are in our communities and clinics. Yet important gaps remain in risk recognition, referral for genetic evaluation, screening, and multidisciplinary coordination.
CGA-IGC is fortunate to count many leading hereditary GI cancer experts among its members and is committed to removing barriers so that multidisciplinary teams across the Americas can access the most current, evidence-based information. No matter your role - gastroenterologist, genetic counselor, advanced practice provider, nurse practitioner, physician assistant, social worker, psychologist, surgeon, oncologist, geneticist, or another provider caring for families affected by colorectal or hereditary GI cancers, staying informed directly improves outcomes.
This year, each week during Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month focused on a different theme:
Week 1: Advocacy - highlighting Fight CRC’s initiatives, including United in Blue, Call on Congress, and updates on early-onset CRC. Learn more about Fight CRC's initiatives HERE! Find out what else we released during this week HERE
Week 2: Research in colorectal cancer. Learn more HERE about what we highlighted in week 2.
Week 3: JEDI-related topics and ongoing disparities in care. A lot of insightful content was shared during this week. See what was released HERE
Week 4: Lynch syndrome and the outstanding work and resources from our members. Approximately 1 in 279 people in the U.S. are living with Lynch syndrome. We're lucky to have many members who are leaders in the field of study and share their expertise. Explore what we released during week 4 HERE
Our vision is to eliminate morbidity and early mortality from hereditary GI cancers and this will only be achieved if the patient remains at the center of our discovery, research, and education efforts. Be part of the effort to learn, collaborate, and improve outcomes for the families you serve.
